Heat Things Up April 20, 2010 C. Terrell 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
This is a neat little device- a portable ultrasound machine. Its works the same way as diagnostic ultrasound machines that you see in doctor's offices to give you pictures of your insides- it shoots sound waves into your tissues. The difference is that the therapeutic ultrasound here operates at a higher intensity (lower intensities are used for diagnostic purposes).
Anyway, ultrasound is a rather simple device- there's a crystal in it, and when you run electricity through it, you get sound waves coming out the tip. Then, these sound waves pass through the tissues in your body and heat things up. As you might have guessed by now, the main reason you'd want to buy this product is to heat up parts of your body.
So why not just use a hot pack to heat things up- it sure would be a lot cheaper? Well that's a major selling point here, and why you see these things in practically every physical therapy clinic- ultrasound provides DEEP heat.
A few technical details. Higher INTENSITIES, like 1.5 to 2.5 W/cm2, may be required when the target tissue is very fleshy or deeply located. Note that this unit has three intensities: Low (1.6 W), Medium (2.6 W) and High (4.6 W).
Also, the higher the ultrasound FREQUENCY is, the the greater the absorption of energy is in the superficial structures. This means that higher FREQUENCIES, such a 3MHz should be used when the target tissues are superficial (1-2 cm beneath the skin), and a frequency of 1 MHz should be used for treating target tissues loacated at depths of 3-5 cm beneath the surface of the skin. Note that this is a 1MHz unit.
Interestingly, muscle absorbs twice as much ultrasound as fat absorbs, and bone absorbs 10 times more ultrasound than does soft tissue. That's why if you have it on too high or hold it in one spot for a long time (esp. over bony areas) you get an ache or a pins-and-needles sensation- that's the covering of your bone heating up!
Okay, so what's up with that gel that comes with it? Well, as I've said, there's sound waves coming from the end of the ultrasound device that you put against your skin. If you don't use some sort of conducting gel, cream, or lotion, the sound waves can't get from the ultrasound machine to your tissues very well- in other words, the gel just helps conduct the sound waves efficiently so you can get the full benefit. I've never seen a study showing one gel better than the other, so if you run out, just try regular lotion- I've never had it be an issue.
Who would benefit from this device? Anyone that needs to get heat to an area to 1) decrease pain, or 2) increase the circulation to an area. Problems such as tendinitis or sore muscles can do well with ultrasound, as the heat increases the circulation to the problem area- and increased circulation means increased healing time!
A neat device that's pretty user friendly, consider this ultrasound machine for just about any ache or pain. Those with elbow tendinitis might also want to check out Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow.
Value for money January 21, 2010 Derek Thomas (Victor, Idaho) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This product seems well designed and engineered. It is ergonomically superior to a previous device I had. Have been using it for a couple of months to treat minor soft tissue injuries and am very happy with it.
Good product July 6, 2009 C. Perrelli (CA) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This item delivered as ordered and does what is it designed for. As a home unit ultra-sound I found it very convenient. I would really only use this with the advice of an MD or Physical Therapist.
deep heat????? April 9, 2009 Pro Girl (Feasterville, PA) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Not sure what previous reviewer was talking about. The product uses ULTRASOUND waves for pain relief NOT heat. After repeated use, the pain in my knee and shoulder was feeling great. I think you should re-read the description and reconsider your opinion. Great product sold by a great company.
works great! July 5, 2010 Donna it's pretty nice for a portable US....kinda wish they had a battery powered one, but all in all great results!
